Transporting dogs in vehicles can often be a nerve-wracking experience, not just for pet owners but especially for the dogs themselves. However, CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, might just be the key to a more relaxed journey for our furry friends.
A study by the Waltham Petcare Science Institute in the UK has revealed that dogs administered CBD prior to car travel exhibited notable decreases in stress and anxiety. The research, conducted in collaboration with Mars Petcare, involved twenty dogs known to experience stress during car rides. Unlike their carefree counterparts who relish in the breeze through an open car window, these dogs demonstrated clear signs of anxiety.
Administered two hours before travel, CBD resulted in “meaningful improvements” in the dogs’ demeanor over the 24-week study period. Researchers gauged stress levels by measuring cortisol, a stress-related hormone, and observing behaviors like whining. The findings indicated that daily CBD dosing could have a calming effect on dogs, making car journeys less stressful.
Interestingly, the placebo group also showed reduced stress, likely due to becoming accustomed to car travel. However, the CBD group displayed a more significant reduction in cortisol levels, suggesting that CBD’s effects extend beyond mere habituation to car rides.
The study advocates for using CBD as part of a broader strategy to mitigate canine anxiety, potentially in conjunction with behavioral therapies. This holistic approach could provide a comprehensive solution to managing stress in dogs.
This research aligns with other studies highlighting CBD’s potential benefits for dogs, including seizure reduction and pain relief from conditions like arthritis. As cannabis legalization progresses, the role of CBD in enhancing canine well-being continues to gain recognition, marking a positive stride in pet care and offering a shared path to relaxation for both dogs and their human companions.
